There are thousands of web hosts selling their services online and if you just accept the first offer you find, you may pay for it dearly. This page will introduce you to the world of web hosting, and recommend good hosts.
If you are on your way to creating your first site, you wish to find a cheap host. There are two options: either you pick a free host, or one you have to pay for. Free hosts provide you with a subdomain (yoursite.provider.com), or a subdirectory (www.provider.com/yoursite/), while with money you can by your own domain (www.yousite.com). Domains attract more traffic, but you might want to start with a free host, and buy a domain later.

If, on the other hand, you want a free web host, you should try searching Free Web Hosts. They have the best index of free hosts I’ve seen, and their power search allows you to quickly find a host with the services you need.
Most hosts will have a tutorial or help on uploading your site, but if you are unsure about it, you should pick a host that supports upload by browser. FTP upload is better once your site grows, so a host that supports both would be ideal.

There is a solution to those that have a limited budget, but already have the tools and do not even know it. I am often asked how can I help someone get a website and use Adsense as a way to generate a flow of income. Having complete control over your domain is much better then Free hosts, and the more quality pages you have out there means you can make more money with Adsense. You can have a website with just a purchase of a domain name, and have complete control over it and add/update in real time. There are some strict requirements, but you will have complete control over your site. I am getting ready to write an article about this.
any chance you could make a follow-up post regarding the quality and stability of the hosting? of course i want a cheap host, but i want to make sure it stays up when i get a swarm of visitors
