A lot of talk lately about a PageRank update happening. But what exactly is the PageRank?
PageRank is the algorithm Google uses to determine the value of a site through its link relationship with other sites. This is how Google describes it:
“PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves ‘important’ weigh more heavily and help to make other pages ‘important’.”
Named after one of its developers, Larry Page, PageRank is one of the most important metrics SEO people use to determine a site’s value. PageRank is only updated for everyone to see every few months, last in April. According to some speculation the next update might happen on between now and the beginning on August.
Now is the last time to SEO with Google in mind, before it updates. Be sure to gather as many quality links as possible.
