Google Search Engine Optimization

With over 50% market share, Google is the search engine to target.

Google puts more emphasis on the age of the site than the other two SEs. Also link quality matters more. You need descriptive links, with variations of your keywords, from sites with a high page rank. This may happen naturally over time, just keep finding ways to get reputable sites to link to you naturally. You should focus on sites about the same topic as yours.

With Google, obvious focus on a keyword may hurt you more than help. Use variations of the keyword (ie. ’searching’ instead of only ’search’), and synonyms (’net’ and ‘web’ instead of only ‘internet’).

When adding internal links, use descriptive anchor text to improve crawling depth. Avoid excessive internal links with the same keyword. Use synonyms here, too. A sitemap can also help crawling depth. Submit it using Google Webmaster Tools.

Descriptive URLs also matter with Google. Get your own descriptive domain, and name your pages logically for better ranking. Root domains are preferred to subdomains by Google.

In Conclusion

Remember two words when you SEO for Google: link quality. Getting your site listed in traffic exchange catalogs, or new web directories does not help you page rank. Getting listed in the most important web directories, helps some. Getting authentic citations is the sure, if slow, way to go.

Do you feel that due to Google’s dominance and the competitiveness amongst sites to gain good rankings that at times it can be a better strategy to target the less popular search engines that still have the capability of driving thousands of visitors per day to your website?

Exactly. At least when the site is still young, and Google will be unlikely to index it, you should target other engines first.
