Blogging about your website is both a SEO technique and a means of viral marketing.

Search Engines - Blog and Ping

When you blog about your website, and link to it, search engines follow that link to your website. But a link in a blog is not just another link. You can submit the blog feed to a number of search engines, and ping them when you write a new post. Many blog services can do this automatically, but you can manually ping with eg. Ping-o-matic.

Blogging and pinging is a way to make sure a new website gets noticed by search engines, but you can also use it for other purposes. Analyze which pages on your site are not yet indexed, and blog about them. Or link with keywords that are not mentioned on your site, and your site may also rank for those search terms in the future.

Viral Marketing - Join the Blogosphere

By commenting on other blogs you can get more traffic to your blog. Just post good well thought comments, don’t spam. Traffic from good comments is very targeted, and those visitors are likely to stay on your site. Choose a good page to list as your blog address when commenting on other blogs. It might not be the front page, but rather a welcoming post, which explains what your blog is all about. Something that converts new visitors.

By blogging, and reading other blogs you also stay up to date on what is hot in the net. You can use this information to develop your site, and update it with hot features.
