I’ve posted before on how to monetize your website with ads, and affiliate programs, but monetizing a blog is different. A blog has even more options to choose from for sources of revenue than a traditional website.

Banner Ads

Banner ads, like those from Google AdSense, are by far the most common way to monetize a website, and blogs are no exception. I’ve tackled the choices you need to make in the past, but with blogs placement is even more important. You can place your ads in a sidebar, but that will not give a very high CTR. Banners at the top, above posts have a higher CTR, but you will get the highest when ads are within your posts, inside content.

Text-Link Ads

Correctly placed sidebar links ina high quality blog can generate quite much targeted traffic. Blogs are also indexed often, which makes text links in blogs very valuable from a SEO perspective. Both these reasons explain why Text-Link Ads, and other similar services are used to great effect in blogs. These are usually paid monthly, so they are a more passive source of revenue in the sense that a small traffic lump won’t have too much effect in the short run.

Affiliate Programs

Affiliate programs work well with blogs, because it is easy to write a post on a focused topic. Readers of blogs are also quite ready to click on links in posts, because blogs are often heavily interlinked. The drawback is that many blog readers tend to be bloggers themselves, and may be more conscious that it is an affiliate link you are promoting than an average internet user would.

Paid Posts

This is where blogs most notably differ from traditional websites. Paid to post services such as PayPerPost offer chances to promote a product with a blog post for money. The posts can pay anything from $10 up, and are often an important share of a blog’s advertisement revenue. PayPerPost has a minimum site age of 90 days, but there are alternatives if you have a new blog. SponsoredReviews accept even new sites, and have a long list of available opportunities.

Thanks for the feedback, I added your blog to my Technorati Favorites so I can keep up with what you write.

I would like to also add that (private ad arrangements) work well with blogs that have a good PR and or are established. This way you can keep all the profits, as opposed to sharing the commission with a middleman. So set up a link on your blog, where folks can order text links or banner ads directly from you. Such as you (sutocu) have done. You have a nice advertiser page.

Thank you for your comment, Missy.

I think it’s true that private advertising works better for more established blogs. This is partly due to the fact that such blogs may seem more reliable. With private arrangements there’s always the possibility that one of the parties just scams the other. I hope no one will think so of me; I have no reason not to honor deals, which will profit both parties.

if i had to choose, i’d probably go with the text-link ads.
