If you are not yet a StumbleUpon user, I advice you to join immediately. The potential of social marketing is just growing, and with Google on a more aggressive banning spree - it’s advisable to find new sources of traffic.

The first thing you have to understand before getting frustrated on poor marketing results is that not every stumble is alike. The power and effect of hitting the thumbs up icon in your toolbar depends on various things. If you disregard these you may not experience great traffic, but take them into account and you can stumble with effect.

Power Stumblers

Much of the effect of a single stumble depends on the stumbler. The so called ‘power stumblers’ with hundreds or thousands of pages stumbled, and a great amount of fans listed have the most effective stumbles. Just a single stumble from the right user may send a hundred visitors to your page.

Another benefit the more established stumble users enjoy is that their profile gets more visitors. These visitors may click the links from the stumbler’s favorites, and are much more likely to say ‘I like it!’ Remember that it’s not all about the stumbler though.

Content Counts

In addition to ’show more’, a stumbler that arrives to your page through the toolbar may also hit the ‘no more’ button. How long the stumblers keep arriving depends on the proportion of stumblers that like the page. Needless to say, their like or dislike depends on the content you are presenting them.

Getting some initial stumbles will do you no good, if the content is not right. You should therefore only focus on promoting good pages. Also remember that factors such as page loading time and pop-ups affect the likability of your page. Stumblers are quick to click themselves to the next page, if the content takes ages to load.

Taking Advantage

How then to take advantage of this knowledge? Firstly, as I mentioned above, focus on promoting your quality pages. No use wasting your time with the weaker ones, since you will only get a few uninterested visitors. That’s a waste of bandwidth, too.

Secondly, target the content correctly. Not every stumbler want to read celebrity news. That’s why they haven’t selected it as one of their preferred topics. Only submit pages under the most relevant topic, and the stumblers that arrive there will be targeted visitors. If you ask someone else to discover your page, remember to suggest the topic to them.

Finally, when you’ve selected a great page on your site and defined its topic, try to get established stumblers to give a couple of stumblers for it. Then, and only then, will the momentum that gives your submission be worthwhile. Good luck with your stumbles, and feel free to add me as your friend on StumbleUpon.

Great writeup and very true…Social bookmarking is powerful but you have to know your audience and promote quality.

I’ve seen StumbleUpon drive a lot of traffic to my sites. However, what you said about content is right. What good is traffic if you don’t have the content to keep them there, and more important get them to return. I only try to submit what I think is my finest work.

I fully agree with everything you said and give you kudos for making a post about it. I’ve had definite success with StumbleUpon and have found all your methods to be effective for myself. The one gripe I have with SU is that I have reached a maximum of adding friends (200) and I’m not sure why they’d put a cap on that. Any ideas?

Stumbleupon is not the best. It gives you backlinks and increases your SERP rankings but the visitors tend to have a very low CTR. I think the best way is just natural link building for good SERP rankigns. I like your blog, i have already subcribed. I would like you to post more often though because your posts are very interesting.

Thank you for the comments!

While it is true that visitors from social media (be it Digg or SU) tend not to click on ads, there are ways to monetize that traffic. I’ll have to write an article on that in the future, but for now I’ll just say that there are basically three ways to do that:

  1. Make them an offer they can’t refuse - That could be an affiliate offer, or a product/freebie you distribute.
  2. Capitalize on the traffic instead of the visitors - Either through CPM ads, or through increased monthly ad sales for example.
  3. Link baiting - If some of the visitors really like where they land, they may link to it later. This works best if you have no ads (!) on the landing page.

Number 1 above is the most difficult, but brings great revenue if you succeed. The second is probably the easiest, and you could complement the other two ways with it. The third needs a great link bait, but may increase your visibility and search engine visitors in the long run.

The maximum number of friends is probably to avoid some kind of abuse through automatic friend adds. Nevertheless, I think it’s quite low. Could be 500 for example.

As for the number of posts, I maintain a steady 5-6 per week. I try to publish every day from Monday to Friday, with the occasional article during the weekend. Since I have other things going on (like my studies), I cannot maintain a higher rate with regularity, but I’ll do my best. :)

You’re welcome Todd! I hope it works well for you. The effect on PageRank may not be huge, but I just experimented on creating a website with only social backlinks and it got indexed in just a few days (more on this in a future post).

Mark, the social media are definitely a faster way to get traffic than search engines. Getting a site indexed in Google might not take more than a few days, but it will take time to develop your SERP position. The traffic from Google will be minimal before you rank for inportant terms.

Sucotu,

Excellent article. I am currently getting a lot of traffic right now on an article I posted, well really, it is just a quote by Henry Ford with a picture that has been Stumbled at least twice that I know of, the first time being about 10 days ago and again two days ago.

It would be good to see in your article if there is a way to tell who Stumbled you or the specific article in case there is more than one Stumble. I have been trying to figure that part out.

I added you to my friends list on Stumble and look forward to more articles. Quality content is one thing but reading other quality content is like pulling other bloggers up to your quality level.

Gracias,

Mark

Trust me, it is. The traffic is not as straightforwardly monetized, but that should not hinder you.

Listen. Do not have an opinion while you listen because frankly, your opinion doesn?t hold much water outside of Your Universe. Just listen. Listen until their brain has been twisted like a dripping towel and what they have to say is all over the floor.
