Been over a month since my last post with this title. I won’t try to sum up everything that’s happened in between, since that would require a post longer that this whole blog and way better memory than I happen to own. Instead I will mention a few hot topics from the past week or so.

Free Advertising: Bryan from One Man’s Goal has found yet another way to increase traffic and backlinks. He is offering free 40×40 pixel advertising for anyone, who writes a review about his blog, or just a short introduction. The requisite is, of course, a followable link back to his blog. I should review his site, but for now I’ll see if this paragraph is enough to give me a bit of ad space.

Million Euro Wiki: Countless posts have been written on the topic all over the Blogosphere. If you wish to read on the topic, I suggest taking a look at Million Euro Update by the Cow and Million Euro Gamble by Angel to read about contrasting viewpoints on the topic. My opinion on the whole mess? I congratulate John Cow on finding an effective way to make money, but would have been a lot more interested to see something more original than this.

Custom Search: Maki from Dosh Dosh recently wrote an excellent post on adding Google Custom Search to a blog instead of the WordPress search function. In addition to the reasons he listed - more accurate results and ability to monetize through AdSense for Search - there’s at least one more reason I can think of in favor of Google Custom Search. This takes some load off your server, since the searching will be done by Google and not by your WordPress script. I haven’t added it on my site yet, but it’s definitely on my to-do list.

TNX.net: I mentioned TNX.net in my post on BlogRush Alternatives, but since then I’ve seen both organic and paid reviews about them on some quite high profile blogs. One of them is Courtney Tuttle’s, who write a very positive review on it. I’m working on another website, on which I will use it. I’ll write a review on it then.

I think that if you link to him, and he links to you, then neither links count for rank because it was a trade. I believe rank only counts if they are one way.

Thanks Bryan. :) I’ll throw something together later today.

Niagara Guy, the SEO effect really depends on the type of links. Reciprocal sidebar links are generaly thought to have little effect. This however, is different. Also, at least I’m doing it more fore the advertisement value - ie visitors. ;)

Niagara Guy the most important thing is to get links and give as few as possible. This is not easy but there are a bunch of ways to get links and not have to trade in the process.

Niagara - Sutocu is correct. If we were exchanging blogroll links it would have little value. This wouldn’t be considered a “link exchange”.

I’ve been using TNX and it is working well for me so far…good post.

Vic, your comment was captured by Akismet… You haven’t been spamming around, have you? :)

That’s one take on it, but I don’t really believe in the give-as-few-as-you-can -philosophy. Search engines expect outbound links, they won’t penalize you for them. Unless you have too many. Of course, SEO is an inexact science, and we can’t really be sure what’s the best method.

I think the free advertising idea is a great one… If people aren’t allowed to do paid links (or may be penalized for doing so), then free it is! :)
