A lot of hype has followed the recent launch of WidgetBucks - a Cost Per Click advertising widget (you’ll see it below). Despite having been featured by several high profile bloggers, WidgetBucks has resulted in a lot of negative feedback too.

Many want proof that they are paying, before they commit to it. Since WB pay monthly and payment processing takes 45 days after the end of the month, the first paychecks will be seen in December. I believe this is a major setback for their success at the moment.

Their $25 free to new publishers sounds very good, but has also been a cause of concern: Can they really afford to pay that much even after the high CPC many are experiencing? I wouldn’t worry about that, since the other $25 (to reach minimum payout of $50) will have to be earned by the publisher and results in money to them. Many have already reported earnings of hundreds of dollars, so I’m quite sure they have the money to pay, once it comes to that.

Their referral program is better than most PPC/CPC ad networks have. They will pay 10% revenue earned for 12 months. If you refer a user that only makes a couple of dollars, you’ll still get your share unlike with AdSense, where a minimum amount needs to be earned. Also, if you manage to refer a power user, the 10% may result in quite much in the end.

Despite all the good sides I’m not going to use WidgetBucks on this blog. Why? I don’t think it’s good for all sites. On a technology related product review site it would be optimal. On my blog it would probably not convert very well, as the products would not match that well. I’m test using the program on a couple of other sites, but don’t plan on using it here.

Should you wait until December, or start using it now, then? I definitely think now is the time to start. Their referral program is very good, so you should move before everyone has registered. Also, they have very high CPC rates at the moment, but that might change in the future, if many lower quality sites join the program.

Some have claimed WidgetBucks will be a real AdSense competitor, but I don’t really believe in that. Nevertheless, the program has a lot of potential, and I can’t see a reason that it couldn’t succeed to a lesser degree.

New CPC and other advetising schemes seem to be popping up every day. There might be some with a different twist but I have not seen any. It’s true Google Adsense does not give an explaination why they pay publishers a certain amount. The new guys on the block are more open but will they be able to compete.

It would be a real climb to compete with adsense, it seems all that have tried have failed, and Google announcing a jump of 43% on there earnings, they will be the top dog for some time.

Jane, it’s true that there’s a long way to the level of AdSense. Just like there’s a long way to the level of Google, if you are building a new search engine. They’ve almost got a monopoly in those two areas.

Well hopefully it turns out be the real deal. The more options the better off.

We’ve been utilizing desktop and web-enabled widgets for nearly 6 months with our printer ink and toner business. The ROI on them is really strong. I highly recommend them.
