If you wish to grow your website’s readership, the most difficult thing is not to generate a lot of traffic. No, it is easy when compared to sustaining that traffic after you have managed to generate it. You could easily double your hits for one day with a little social marketing, but it might not be as simple to keep that new level.
Of course, you could just continue the marketing, and sustain the traffic that way, but that will take a lot of time. If, on the other hand, you manage to convert the first time visitors into regular readers, your marketing campaign will have a permanent effect.
I probably won’t have to repeat the old “content is king” phrase for you again (oops, I think I did), but that’s not all there is to it. In addition to creating high quality content, there are other ways to make readers stay and return. You should learn to reward your readers. There are many ways you can do it.
- Respond - Answer as many comments and emails you possibly can. If you get hundreds a day, you don’t need to write a personal reply to all of them, but otherwise do your best.
- Blog about them - Links are like a currency in the blogosphere, and I don’t mean just the SEO aspect. By mentioning your loyal readers you reward them, and make it more likely that they link back.
- Blogroll - For the same reason as above, obviously. You could choose some manually, or use a top commentators plugin.
- Dofollow - By using a dofollow plugin you give every commentator a link back by removing the nofollow relationship from the link.
- Hold contests - Blog contests can be used both as a way to build buzz and as a way to reward your readers. A contest like that held by Simon at Yeepage Journal will increase commenting and sense of community.
I hope these five tips will help grow your blogging community. I know I feel rewarded when the sites I regularly visit use them.

Yeah, contests are definitely one of the most effective ones. I’m planning on holding one, once I get my advertisement budget sorted out.
Great tips, particularly responding to comments and mentioning loyal commentators. Good ways to keep regulars around which in turn is another arm that may help expose you to those who haven’t heard of you.
