Your choice of web hosting should depend on your needs. Not everyone needs a dedicated server, while some sites definitely need one. Before deciding on a web host, you need to know your needs. After that you can compare different web hosting providers.

First you must know what you’re hosting. Are you looking to only host your blog, or do you plan to create multiple sites? When you know what you are hosting, you need to determine how much resources you need. These are the most important resources you are going to need:

  • Disk space. Finding out how much space your website takes is quite easy. For example, a WordPress blog takes only some 10MB of disk space for the software. All posts are stored in a database.
  • Bandwidth. Every time a page is downloaded by a visitor, it consumes bandwidth. How much bandwidth you need depends on your page size, and the number of visitors.
  • Hosted domains. This is important, if you have several sites you want to host. Some hosting accounts come with only one domain to host. Additional domains are often known as “addon domains”.

In addition your website may require different features. Examples include PHP support, MySQL databases, Ruby on Rails, etc. Your needs depend on how your website is coded. You should make sure you know it before choosing a host.

Recommended Web Hosting

Depending on your needs, there are several options. Here are some web hosts I recommend, and the reasons to choose them. Which you choose depends on your needs.

OxyHosts

This is the web host I use. They have different shared hosting plans, and also offer free hosting. The “special” plan is only $1/month and that comes with 1000MB disk space and 10GB/month bandwidth. That’s the one I use for now. They support most of the common scripting, and offer Fantastico for easy installation of eg. WordPress. I recommend them for their support: all my support tickets have been answered in a matter of hours.

DreamHost

If you need to host several high traffic websites, DreamHost is the host I recommend. Their plan includes 500GB of storage and 5000GB of bandwidth, which can be used to host unlimited domains. They support almost anything you can think of, including advanced e-commerce features. What does all this cost? You can get it for $5.95/month if you pay in advance. Even the shorter term prices top at $10.95/month. If you sign up with them, remember to use my code YOURWEBHOSTING for a free domain.

NearlyFreeSpeech.net

At the other end of the spectrum there’s NFS. If you only need to host small niche websites with low traffic, this is the host to use. With NFS you only pay for what you use. For only $0.50 you can host a 1MB website for a year and get 300MB bandwidth for it. The best part is that they allow you to host unlimited domains.

Hi Sutocu

Thanks for the info (and thanks for visiting my blog earlier). I’d like to put in a plug for 2mhost.com - They have a $2.75 package that is about as cheap as you’ll find anywhere. I have had a reseller account with them for more than a year and have had no problems whatsoever.

Thanks for pointing them out, I hadn’t heard of them. Then again, it’s impossible to have heard of every host these days.

Their plans look good except for the fact that you’d have to have a reseller account to host multiple websites. The other plans only support one to three websites, which is not enough for me.

Still, they’re probably a fine choice for many, if their uptime is good.

DreamHost looks really good. I currently have BlueHost: 300G storage and 5,000G bandwidth for $1 more per month.

I’ve heard good things about BlueHost, but they are a bit expensive. If their support and uptime is better, I wouldn’t mind paying, but I have no experience. How are they?
