If you are planning a new website, one of the important decisions you must make is the domain name. Domain name is one of the things about your website that is not easily changed afterwards. It’s also important due to branding.
In creating a website you plan to make money with, you are starting up a new online business. The reason many websites fail to bring in traffic is that they lack a solid brand. There are two obvious choices you could make with respect to your domain name and the name of your new site: register the site’s name as a domain name, or name the site according to the domain. Either way you are limited by the available domain names.
Searching for Available Domains
Domain registrars have search forms that you can use to find available domains. Most also have a “bulk check” or “bulk search”, where you can enter several names and select different top level domains. By trying a few names related to your niche, you will quickly find that many good dot com domains are already taken.
If a keyword domain you would want has been taken, you have two options: you can add keywords - “XboxActionGames.com” instead of “XboxGames.com”; or you can try different top level domains - “VegetarianDishes.net” instead of “VegetarianDishes.com”.
“Brandable” Domain Names
Domain names, which are short and memorable, but mean nothing, are often called “brandable” domain names. These are names like “Vedok.com”, or “Piny.biz”. Short meaningless domain names are often used for web 2.0 websites. The advantages are that there are many short ones still available, and that if you choose a good one, it makes for a good brand name.
Where to Register
The two registrars I recommend are GoDaddy and Namecheap. I like Namecheap due to their payment methods, ease of use and because you get free domain privacy with new registrations. GoDaddy is a bit cheaper, and just as reliable.

I’m gonna register a domain name that i’ve had in my head now for several weeks, and is PERFECT for a web 2.0 app or site. I’m gonna go register it now, before i forget. Last time i checked, it was available.
Domain names are very important and when i was in between names for my flagship blog (Groovy Vegetarian) i was thinking of going with the shorter (Groovy Veg) but opted for the seo-friendly version instead.
I’m glad i chose the longer more complete version.
I also want to add, that although many big time blogs are .dot com, perhaps the biggest one of them all, ProBlogger, is a .net, and hasn’t hurt him. (and never will)
I dont think i’ve ever NOT clicked on a site or blog, because it had a 2nd tier extension such as a .net, .info, or .biz, etc.
They all work, although a .dot com is the most popular and sought after.
I agree that there’s little difference in the TLD. The only URLs that have made me skip a link are some country specific TLDs, like .ru.
Sorry for being slightly off topic, but can anybody suggest what are the best practices to follow, if you wnat to avoid being dropped in the Google Sandbox, if you are working on a new domain.
To avoid the Sandbox, consider not submitting your website to search engines at all. Instead let them discover it through links from other sites. If you get into the Sandbox, you should build links from popular sites. Having a feed and submitting it through Webmaster Central also helps.
Having a new domain is an advantage really. I find that old domains with new sites are more likely to get into Google Sandbox than new sites on new domains.
might be worth considering expired domains, there are tons of expired domains with backlinks and/or some google pr, they’re definitely worth the time that invested.
Frankly, despite the PageRank, it is often more difficult to get a dropped domain to rank in Google. Especially if your website has a different topic than the old one. Other than that, expired domains are a fine choice.
Nice post with good advices. but now a days i’m feeling that all the domains are already taken.
Very nice post. I think a domain name is key to a successful online business.
