You have probably heard of article marketing before, but may have dismissed it as not worth the effort. The truth is, the backlinks you get are not always worth the time you spend to write an article. However, it does not take nearly as much time to rewrite your blog posts into articles as it would to write a whole new article.
The idea behind article marketing is that you write articles on a topic, and include an author box with them linking back to your website or offer. The article will then be published by other webmasters, who need content for their websites. Every copy of the article will include your author box and link back to your site.
To make your article available for others, all you need to do is submit it to article directories. Most of these directories also display your author box and so give you a backlink. This means that article marketing will at least get you links from the directories you submit to, even if no one else picks then up for their site.
You can often turn a blog post into an article very easily. All you need to do is rewrite it to a more article like form, if your posts are not normally structured enough. The rewriting process will also make the new article unique content, so that you will not be penalized in search engines.
After you have rewritten the post into an article, you will want to submit it to directories. I have already written a post on where to submit, but you can use whatever directories you like. If you only want to submit your article once, I recommend Article Marketer, because they will distribute your article to a range of other websites and newsletters.

Just a casual observation, but if you are going to mention a paid service like article marketer, you are missing out on money if you don’t use their affiliate program. What if someone signs up? You should get paid for it! And it’s not like it costs the person who signs up any more cash.
Just my 2 cents.

I totally agree: article marketing is a great way to improve your rankings, and one of the fastest one. I once did manual submissions, those were not successful though. I mostly use articlemarketer now (customers support there is SLOW), and submit manually only to a handful of directories like buzzle or ezinearticles.
I have had great success with article marketing and article marketer. I had not reconsidered re-writing my posts into articles though. Which totally makes sense now that you bring it up. Why start from scratch for each piece you write when you can start with a draft of sorts.
You know it’s funny because all the so called “Guru’s” say article marketing is dead.
However I still submit about 20 to 50 articles a week for my various websites and they keep the traffic and clicks to my affiliate programs coming in!
I’ve heard about Article Marketing but wasn’t sure if it would help any of my sites. I’ll definitely look into it. Thanks for the useful information and post!

Question:
If I use a service to submit an article to more than one site, what happens if the article is published on more than one site? Will I be penalized for duplicate content?
Even if if you only submit it to one site, it will get picked up by others and published elsewhere. All the copies will not appear on SERPs, but that does not mean they will hurt either. The copy with most search engine power will rank best (usually Ezine Articles if you submit there), while all of them give you link juice from the author boxes.
Submitting to multiple sites is not a bad idea, you just have to ask yourself whether it’s worth the effort. I only submit to Ezine Articles and Article Marketer myself.

I had one of my articles picked up by a blogger and I think this increased my PR; I noticed it went from no PR to PR2 and then I found my article on this blog through my Technorati reactions. Too bad I was doing sponsored reviews at the time and my PR went down to 0 shortly after!
